Domain Name FAQ

What is a domain name ?

A domain name, a series of textual characters that identifies a specific IP address, uniquely identifies a website on the Internet. Domain names locate businesses, organizations, or other entities on the Internet. Domain names are easy to remember, easy to type alternatives to obscure URL’s that you receive with free website hosting services. Using a domain name allows you to receive more visitors, less bounced emails, and the chance to make a lasting impression on the Web.

A great benefit of using your domain name is that regardless of how many times you change your access provider, your Email and website address will always remain the same.

Why should I register a domain ?

More than 200.000 domain names are registered per month. Registering your domain name now ensures your ownership of the domain name that may not otherwise be available when you want it. Once registered, that domain name is yours (provided that the registration and renewal fees are paid each year).

How can I find out if the domain name I want is still available?

8TECH HK provides a domain name search engine that can instantly tell you whether or not the name is available – please click here to check now. If a domain name is available, you will be given the option to register it.

Do I need a domain name to have a website ?

While a domain name is not necessary to have a website, it is highly recommended. Whether you are creating a family website or a business website, having a domain name allows your site to be more easily found and remembered.

What type of domain names can I register at 8TECH HK?

You can currently register more than 70 different top-level-domains at 8TECH HK. Most popular are .com, .com.hk, .hk and .asia domain names.

What characters are allowed in a domain name?

You can use letters (a-z), numbers (0-9) and dashes/hyphens (–) in your domain name.Spaces are not allowed and the domain can’t begin or end with a dash.

Some country-level domains can also be registered as internationalized domain name. An internationalized domain name (IDN) is an Internet domain name that contains at least one label that is displayed in software applications in a language-specific script or alphabet, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Tamil or the Latin alphabet-based characters with diacritics, such as French. These writing systems are encoded by computers in multi-byte Unicode. Internationalized domain names are stored in the Domain Name System as ASCII strings using Punycode transcription.

As some applications do not support internationalized domain names we not recommend to use them as your only one domain name.

How can I register a .at, .in, or .tf domain through 8TECH HK?

8TECH HK offers a huge list of available top-level domains – please refer to our Domainchecker page for a list of available extensions and pricing.

How much does it cost to register a domain name?

Each domain name is subject to an annual registration fee which varies depending on the domain/registry (please see our Domainchecker page for pricing).

What is a subdomain ?

A subdomain is a domain that is part of a larger domain. For example, mail.example.com and calendar.example.com are subdomains of the example.com domain.

After we have successfully registered a domain name you can setup subdomains for this domain name in the online control panel, e.g. shop.yourdomain.com etc.

Can I change my domain name after registration ?

Unfortunately a domain name cannot be modified after it has been registered. You will need to cancel your existing domain name and register a new domain name.

How do I transfer a domain name to 8TECH HK?

It’s easy to transfer your domain name to 8TECH HK. Simply go to our transfer page and enter the domain names that you wish to transfer.

What is an Auth Info or EPP code ? Do I need one ?

This code is used as a protection mechanism, to ensure that only the rightful domain owner can control the transfer of the domain name to another service provider. Please ask your current service provider to send you the appropriate code before initiating the domain transfer process.

Why is my Domain name not transferred?

For all domain names, the registrant or administrative contact has full control of the domain name and listed information. Please kindly note that you must update the details of the listed Administrative Contact before you transfer your domain name tp 8TECH HK (this update has to be done by your current service provider).

At 8TECH HK, we always list our client as both of these contacts to ensure your rightful ownership. If you require our assistance, please contact us with full details (include your Domain name) and we will do our best to assist you.

How long does it take to transfer a domain name?

What is Email Forwarding and how does it work?

Email forwarding allows you to forward your email from one email address to another. For example, office@yournewdomain.com could be forwarded to your current email address, giving you the ability to receive all email at one address.

How can I receive an email with my email program?

You will need to setup your email account within your program. Here are basic instructions for a few of the most common email programs:

Mozilla Thunderbird
Go to the ‘Tools’ menu select ‘Account Settings’. Select ‘Email account’, and then click Next. Follow the step-by-step instructions.

Outlook Express
Go to ‘Tools’, then ‘Accounts’. Follow the step-by-step instructions. You will receive your Incoming and Outgoing Mail server information after you place your order. You will also need your username and password that you have chosen in the online control panel.

Outlook
Go to ‘Tools’, then ‘Email Accounts’. You will select to add a new email account. Follow the step-by-step instructions from this point. You will receive your Incoming and Outgoing Mail server information after you place your order. You will also need your username and password that you have chosen in the online control panel.

Eudora
Go to ‘Tools’, then ‘Options’. Follow the step-by-step instructions from this point. You will receive your Incoming and Outgoing Mail server information after you place your order. You will also need your username and password that you have chosen in the online control panel.

What is POP3, IMAP, SMTP ?

POP3, IMAP and SMTP refer to the transfer protocols used by your email program.

POP3 and IMAP refer to protocols used for retrieving emails whereas SMTP is used for sending emails.

What shall I use for receiving emails – POP3 or IMAP?

POP3

POP3 e-mail configuration is best for people who intend to use their e-mail from one computer. With POP3, all messages are typically downloaded from the server without a copy left behind. Once your message is removed from the server from one computer, you cannot access it from another computer.

IMAP

IMAP stores messages directly on the mail server, even after you’ve accessed your e-mail from your home computer. Since the mail stays on the server, you can access the same mailbox from any other Internet-connected computer. The only time that messages are removed from the server is when you delete it from the server. IMAP also allows you to create individual folders for mail (these folders also stay on the server) so that you can manage/organize your e-mail while it stays on the server.

If you are a frequent traveller and/or need to have access to your e-mail from multiple locations, IMAP is the better choice. It’s also recommended if you use dial-up connections to the Internet because the messages that request are the only ones that are downloaded so that you can read them.

If you use only a single computer to access your mail, consider POP3 as a better alternative.

For most situations, we recommend IMAP.

Note that IMAP e-mail takes up more of your available storage on the server and this may quickly fill up the quota alloted for you. POP3 e-mail, once downloaded, will free up this space.

Your email account can be configured as both for IMAP or POP3 depending on how your email program is configured.

Does your mail server support secure connections?

Yes, all our mail servers support secure connections via SSL/TLS both for receiving and sending emails.

What is web hosting ?

Web hosting (also referred as website hosting) is a service that allows you to upload and store HTML documents and related files (images, media files, etc.) on our web server. Our server then makes the files available on the Internet for viewing by the public.

Is there a monthly data traffic limit ?

All our web hosting plans have a ‘Fair-Use’ data traffic limit which is considered 10 times of the available webspace (i.e. 10 GB / 25 GB / 50 GB / 100 GB monthly traffic limit for BRONZE / SILVER / GOLD and PLATINUM plans respectively).

What are the advantages of professional web hosting ?

There are several advantages to web hosting over free hosting services, with the first being domain names. With web hosting, you have the ability to host your website at your domain name, whereas with free website hosting, you generally have a long website address under the hosting providers name (i.e. http://free-web-hosting-provider.org/yourname/…).

Often times, free hosting services require their advertising to remain on your website. At 8TECH HK you fully control the content of your website – all plans are completely ads-free.

Another big advantage of website hosting is the sizable increase in your disk space and bandwidth. With free hosting services, you typically have limited amounts of disk space and bandwidth. The larger amounts that come with your account allow you to hold more files and receive more visitors to your website.

Also, all web hosting plans are ready for dynamic content like a blog or CMS and include a database.

How long does it take for my hosting account to be setup ?

Your web hosting account will be setup immediately after payment. You will receive an email confirmation with your login and FTP information after your account is setup.

Can I upgrade my web hosting plan later ?

Yes, you can upgrade your account at any time, e.g. if you need more disk space or email storage.

How can I transfer my existing website to 8TECH HK ?

First, make a backup of your existing website (files and database) and transfer to your local computer. Once your web hosting account has been setup you can transfer the files to our server (using the data provided in our welcome email).

What is a ‘web hosting control panel’ ?

Our web hosting control panel is a tool which allows all of the settings of your web hosting plan to be setup through a user interface. You can easily connect via your internet browser and administer your email accounts, email addresses, passwords and much more. The login data will be provided by email when your web hosting account is created.

How do I login to my web hosting control panel ?

The login data has been provided in the account setup email. If you have lost this email please contact our support and we will be happy to resend it.

Can I host multiple websites ?

Yes, you can host multiple websites.

How do I update my website ?

To update your website, you will need an FTP program. There are several free programs available online – we recommend FileZilla which is available for various operating systems.

How should the starting page be named ?

Please name your starting page index.htm, index.html or index.php (all lowercase).

Can I track how many people visit my website ?

Yes, every webhosting plan comes with a powerful stats tool (AWStats). It will show you how many visitors have visited your site, where they came from and much more. Stats also include graphical charts, making it easy for you to see how your website performs.

How do I renew my web hosting plan ?

Your hosting account will be renewed automatically to avoid disruption of service. You will receive a reminder email before renewal.

Can I use PHP on my website ?

Yes, all web hosting plans support PHP 5.

Do you offer a database solution ?

Yes, SILVER, GOLD and PLATINUM web hosting plans include at least one mySQL database to support dynamic content (e.g. a blog or CMS).

Do you allow adult content ?

No. Adult content is a violation of our Terms of Service and we will suspend any account storing and/or distributing such material without refund.
